Preview: AEW Dynamite – New Year’s Smash Night One (1/6/21)

AEW New Year's Smash Kenny Omega Fenix

After an emotional night last week, AEW will get back to their regular show. AEW New Year’s Smash begins tonight. Both AEW and NXT are going all out to celebrate the end of a dismal year. Two title matches together with a hoss fight and the return of AEW’s top star. Not only is AEW keeping pace with their tag division. As a matter of fact, AEW is setting a new landscape for their world title. AEW is going into 2021 after a very strong month of television not to mention ratings success. It’s no secret that 2020 was the absolute worst. 2020 was an endless slog of things going wrong month after month coupled with misery and pain. Regardless, 2021 is here and it can’t be any worse…. right? Let’s get ready to rumble:

— Jon Moxley Returns

— Young Bucks & SCU vs. TH2 & The Acclaimed

— Snoop Dog Appears

— Cody Rhodes vs. Matt Sydal

— Jake Hager vs. Wardlow

— AEW Women’s Championship: Hikaru Shida (c) vs. Abadon

— AEW World Championship: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Rey Fenix

Righting a Wrong

Rey Fenix is going to challenge for the world title at AEW New Year’s Smash. It was in the World Title Eliminator Tournament that Fenix bested his brother Penta El Zero M. However, at Eddie Kingston‘s request. Fenix forfeited his title shot to Penta and comparatively came to uncomfortable blows. The Lucha Bros very nearly disbanded before PAC returned and reunited Death Triangle. Now ‘The Bastard” has given “The Bird of War” this match. “The Cleaner’s” quest to be the best like no one ever was will see him in his first roadblock against “The War Bird” tonight.

Fenix has hit a couple of roadblocks last year since returning after lockdown. He was injured in May and unable to compete in the Casino Ladder Match. Coupled with his injury in the World Title Eliminator Tournament. Fenix is ready to prove he belongs in the main event. Kenny Omega claims he might end Fenix’s career for good if he isn’t careful. If there’s one thing The War Bird knows how to do, it’s rise from the ashes.

Inner Circle Staredown

Jake Hager and Wardlow have been staring each other down for weeks. MJF‘s lone wolf attitude not to mention abrasiveness has rubbed his cohorts the wrong way. Sammy Guevara almost left the faction in addition to Chris Jericho‘s gritted teeth for The Salt of the Earth. In order for the group to coexist, Hager and Wardlow will settle their differences tonight.

“The All-American American” and “Mr. Mayhem” are two of AEW’s original hoss wrestlers. Along with Luchasaurus, the company has slowly introduced new big men over time. Wardlow is the next big thing for AEW and does not play nice. Jake Hager and Wardlow are sizing each other up to prove who is the bigger man. Who is the superior bodyguard between MJF’s and Y2J’s heavy henchmen?

The Death Rider Returns

Jon Moxley lost the AEW World Title at Winter is Coming to Kenny Omega. Now he will make his return and will want some revenge. Omega cheated to win the title after Don Callis threw a microphone in the ring. “The Golden Screwjob” gave way to an AEW and IMPACT working agreement. Omega has his hands full as he will appear on IMPACT’s Hard to Kill together with The Good Brothers. “The Purveyor of Violence” is pissed from losing the title and will want Omega’s head on a platter.

Moxley and Omega have tied one apiece. Omega is no longer trying to be the good guy and has everything he ever wanted. He is rejuvenated as “The Cleaner” once more. “The Cleaner” rules the wrestling world in the same fashion as he did in New Japan. Likewise, given that Omega has a target on his back. Will we see Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson come to Dynamite to back up their Bullet Club brother? One thing’s for sure, there will be hell to pay for Kenny “By God” Omega tonight on AEW New Year’s Smash.

Samurai vs Zombie

The New Year starts off right with Hikaru Shida vs Abadon. After taking a bite out of Shida, literally, “The Joshi Samurai” looks for revenge on AEW New Year’s Smash. Abadon has haunted the division for weeks leading up to this match. Shida is going to face her fears as well as put up a fight. Abadon is a silent menace coupled with a horrifying gimmick. She is dead set on demolishing Shida and taking the women’s title. Shida defeated the best in AEW and additionally in Japan. Hikaru Shida is going to slay the zombie or die trying.
