#AndNEW: Keith Lee Becomes NXT’s First-Ever Double Singles Champion

Keith Lee NXT and North American Champion

To compete with All Elite Wrestling‘s two-week Fyter Fest event, NXT countered with a jaw-dropping two weeks of a special known as The Great American Bash. In week one, NXT was highlighted by Io Shirai vs. Sasha Banks in the main event. Week two, however, saw the biggest match in the brand’s decade long history as NXT North American Champion Keith Lee faced off with NXT Champion Adam Cole to crown the first double singles champion in brand history (Adam Cole had previously won the NXT Tag Team titles while NXT North American Champion). And with the show over, there is a new champion and his name is Keith Lee.

The first-ever Double Champion defeated Adam Cole in the main event to win his first NXT Championship. The win for Lee also ended the 404-day reign of Cole as the champion, ending the longest reign of the championship in history. His reign had begun at NXT TakeOver: XXV when he defeated Johnny Gargano for the championship.

Keith Lee had always been destined for the championship, especially after the end of his 2019 that saw him become the “Moment-Maker” as he showed the world what he could do. Even Roman Reigns appreciated what Lee could do as he almost won the Traditional Survivor Series match by pinning both Reigns and Seth Rollins. Somehow, the image seen around the world should have been the tell we needed that Lee was destined for limitless greatness.

The future for Lee is bright as NXT’s first double champ, with a number of challengers expected to lineup and face him for what many can expect to be both championships. For Adam Cole and The Undisputed Era, Raw or SmackDown may be calling their name.

Keith Lee and Io Shirai will lead NXT into their next chapter. Exciting times on the black and gold brand.
