Preview: WWE NXT (5/27/20)

WWE NXT

WWE NXT is back this Wednesday with an exciting card of professional wrestling.  They have been competing weekly with AEW Dynamite now for the better part of a year.  With AEW riding high after an extremely successful Double or Nothing 2020, NXT needs to up its game.  This week, they have announced what appears to be a full card in advance of the show.  AEW Dynamite will again welcome Mike Tyson this week, so a fully advertised card was essential for NXT’s chances in the ongoing ratings war.  Without further ado, let’s dive in and take a look at what the black and yellow brand has to offer.

Group A Decider: Drake Maverick vs KUSHIDA vs Jake Atlas

WWE NXT

The first match of the evening sees the continuation of the NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament.  Drake Maverick, KUSHIDA and Jake Atlas are all tied at 2-1 in Group A.  Therefore, a tie breaker is needed to determine who progresses into the next round.  Maverick has appeared as a potential favorite within the tournament.  Despite being announced among the Black Wednesday releases a couple of months ago, he has gone from strength-to-strength to prove he deserves a place on the NXT roster.  Two weeks ago, he pulled off his biggest upset yet; defeating KUSHIDA.  KUSHIDA has been one of the favorites for the tournament himself, so this proved Drake is not yet finished.  Jake Atlas is perhaps the underdog of the match; neither possessing the story of Maverick nor the starpower of KUSHIDA.  However, he did provide Maverick with his (so far) sole loss in the tournament.  Can he pull off an upset? Will Maverick survive another day? Or will KUSHIDA return to form? Tune in this Wednesday to find out.

Io Shirai & Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair & ??

WWE NXT

Two weeks ago, Charlotte Flair got involved in the number one contender match between Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley.  As a result, NXT TakeOver: In Your House will now offer what could potentially be one of the all-time great women’s matches.  Io Shirai vs Rhea Ripley vs Charlotte Flair.  Of course, there are many questions which arise from this.  Why would Charlotte purposefully get involved and cause her title defense to be a match where she does not need to be pinned to lose the championship? Who knows.  Maybe she just likes to fight.  She has been wrestling across all the brands in recent weeks, so that somewhat makes sense.  Regardless, this match will be excellent.  This week she teams with a mystery partner to take on her In Your House opponents.  Who will her partner be? Find out this Wednesday.

Adam Cole Negotiates With William Regal Regarding Velveteen Dream

William Regal will appear on this week’s NXT to negotiate the future of The Velveteen Dream with Adam Cole.  Cole wants Dream to “disappear forever”.  Dream has been feuding with Cole and The Undisputed Era for months now; having already defeated Bobby Fish at what would have been their TakeOver match.  Will Cole successfully negotiate the disappearance of The Velveteen Dream? Unlikely.  Will Velveteen Dream have something to say to his likely NXT TakeOver: In Your House opponent? Very likely.  Stay tuned.

Cage Fight: Matt Riddle vs Timothy Thatcher – Special Guest Referee Kurt Angle

Timothy Thatcher turned on Matt Riddle just two weeks ago.  In doing so, he cost Riddle and Pete Dunne (who Thatcher was standing in for) their NXT Tag Team Championships to Imperium.  Later in the night, a furious Riddle defeated Thatcher with a roll-up.  With Riddle reportedly moving to SmackDown this week, this will likely be the blow-off to their feud.  Oh, and it’s inside a cage… with Kurt Angle as the referee.  This will clearly be no ordinary match and if it’s the kind of cage it’s believed to be (the match is billed as a “cage fight”), ex-UFC welterweight, Riddle, will be in his element.  Make sure not to miss this fight.

Not Announced But Expected

– Build to Kross vs Ciampa

– Brewing tensions between Johnny GarganoCandice LaRaeKeith Lee, and Mia Yim

– Is William Regal going to do anything about these kidnappings??

– Finn Balor and Damian Priest continue their built to Takeover
