A Riot Silenced: A Look at the Women of Riott Squad

SaNitY was the only faction casualty of WWE’s spring 2019 Superstar Shake-Up when leader Eric Young was drafted to Raw leaving behind Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dain to an unknown future. On Tuesday night, Riott Squad‘s Liv Morgan was drafted to SmackDown Live as a singles competitor, and based on comments from Sarah Logan and Morgan herself, the Riott Squad has now been effectively dissolved.

The most seasoned of the three, Ruby Riott began her career in 2010 as Heidi Lovelaceworking in Michigan and other Midwest indies like NWA Underground (now Pro Wrestling King). In 2012, she headed to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) and began to work with women’s promotions like SHIMMER and Shine, while delving into other area indies like Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW), All American Wrestling (AAW), IWA Mid South, and Beyond Wrestling.

In 2013, she made her debut with CHIKARA, where for the next four years, she would become a staple with the company, while also expanding her touring circuit to include Smash Wrestling in Canada, and more US indies like Freelance Wrestling, Queens of Combat, Ring of Honor and others. In 2015, she enjoyed her first tour with Stardom in Japan.

She signed with WWE in late 2016, debuting in NXT in early 2017. He stint in NXT was brief and by the fall, she got the call to join SmackDown Live, where she formed the Riott Squad stable alongside Logan and Morgan.

Another seasoned indie veteran, Logan got her start in the Midwest as well, starting in 2011 with Indiana’s Destination One Wrestling (D1W). As “Crazy” Mary Dobson, she became one of the indie’s wildlings, honing her craft early in SHIMMER and AIW, as well as heading to Japan in 2012 to work with REINA and Ice Ribbon. She spent a lot of 2013 internationally, expanding her Japanese portfolio to include tours with Diana and Sendai Girls, as well as hitting Europe to work with Scotland’s Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) and Germany’s Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw).

She continued to work frequently in Japan, primarily with Diana, and expanded on her own US indie itinerary, adding QOC, Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), Resistance Pro Wrestling (RPW), Ring of Honor, CHIKARA and more. She also signed with the WWE in 2016 and began working in NXT later that year. She was barely used on TV, except in an enhancement role, before she was brought to SmackDown Live in the fall of 2017 to join the newly established Riott Squad. With her well-known obsession with Viking lore, alongside her real-life husband Raymond Rowe (now known as Erik) of NXT Tag Team Champions War Raiders (now rebranded as The Viking Experience), it’s quite possible that Logan, who remained on Raw, could shift to become the stable’s female member.

A former competitive cheerleader and backyard wrestler with her friends and siblings, Morgan was discovered at a New Jersey gym and signed by the WWE to a developmental contract in late 2014. She spent months at the WWE Performance Center training under Sara Del Rey, before making her NXT Live Event debut in 2015. Much like Logan, Morgan saw very limited action on NXT TV during her NXT tenure, although she was a regular on the Live Event touring circuit. Her first major exposure came following her addition to SmackDown Live in November of 2017 alongside Ruby and Logan in the Riott Squad.
