Indie Watch: ‘Tuff Stuff’ Ricky South

Indie Watch is our regular series that looks at all of the amazing talents working the independent circuits around the world. Some are veterans revitalizing their careers, some are indie prospects hitting their peaks, while others are names to be on the watch for! This edition looks at Australian star, and CHIKARA Young Lions Cup participant, Ricky South.

Although he is only a few short years into his professional wrestling career Australia’s ‘Tuff Stuff’ Ricky South has rapidly risen through the ranks.

A product of the esteemed Pro Wrestling Academy in Sydney, a school which has also produced WWE stars Peyton Royce and Billie Kay. Pro Wrestling Academy head trainers Robbie Eagles, Mick Moretti, and Madison Eagles have provided South with world class training. However, South and many other fellow trainees are also putting in the hard work themselves in order to improve and be noticed by guest trainers.

When speaking about his training regime with J.A.M in 2018 South said, “Matty Wahlberg, myself and others have been training 6 days per week for the past 2 years to get to where we are today. I’ve changed my entire life to suit wrestling.”

This dedication to the craft and love for wrestling, in all of its forms, has allowed South to build a fantastic foundation for his career. South sights Shawn Michaels as his favorite wrestler “without a doubt”, which clearly comes through in his flamboyant persona. In-ring though South back up the flashy flamboyance with a hard-hitting style which is heavily influenced by the Japanese style.

In order to further his skills, South has not only relied on his foundational training from the Pro Wrestling Academy. Over the last 12 months, South has trained with CHIKARA’s Mike Quackenbush, Katsuyori Shibata and Scorpio Sky at the New Japan Pro Wrestling Los Angeles Dojo, and most recently undertook a tryout boot camp with All Japan Pro Wrestling.

In his short but highly successful career, South has faced off against opponents ranging from Robbie Eagles to Bea Priestly to Eli Drake and right through to the deathmatch master Jimmy Havoc.
