Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition focuses on a mammoth match set for Defiant Wrestling’s Fight or Flight show, as “The Aerial Assassin” Will Ospreay is set to tangle with “The Headbanga” El Phantasmo in an Internet Championship #1 Contenders Match.
Two of the best flying wrestlers in the world today will undoubtedly put on an instant classic match for the fans in Sheffield’s Plug venue. There’s no question about whether this will be the match of the evening because there’s nothing else on the show that can come close to it, which says a lot for a show also featuring WALTER against Chris Ridgeway. Ospreay has long been classed as the greatest aerial artist in professional wrestling, whereas Phantasmo is beginning to break out of his shell a bit and become more recognisable in the business.
Will Ospreay
Having debuted in 2012, it’s astonishing to see the level of experience Will Ospreay is on. At just 25 years of age, he’s already competed for some of the major promotions around the world, including Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Ring of Honor, and one of his home promotions New Japan Pro Wrestling. Will has won numerous championships and awards over the years, as well as being the first (and so far, only) British-born wrestler to win New Japan’s historic Best of the Super Juniors tournament. Ospreay’s speed usually helps him move around his opponents, but he may have difficulty doing such a thing with the Canadian export.
El Phantasmo
El Phantasmo has had quite the 2018 thus far. He’s a mainstay in promotions such as ATTACK! and FCP, but his biggest accomplishment was by far his victory in RevPro’s British J Cup. That’s a tournament that included the likes of KUSHIDA, David Starr, and Rich Swann, so for Phantasmo to win the entire thing is a massive deal. One of Canada’s finest wrestlers today, he was a last-minute replacement for the Ringmaster Tournament in place of Matt Riddle which turned out to be a massive success for Defiant management. Night two of the tournament saw him come flying off the stage, nearly taking out the commentators in the process. His match with Ospreay is going to be something special, possibly even one of the best of 2018 across the whole world.
