Match Point: Ultimo Dragon vs. Pentagon Jr. (9/15/18)

Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. Today’s edition focuses on a generational dream match in California on Saturday night, where Japanese/lucha legend Ultimo Dragon faces off against Penta El 0M (Pentagon Jr.) at SoCal Pro Wrestling (SCP).

SoCal Pro Wrestling (SCP) is a West Coast indie that’s been running in the San Diego area of California since 2007 and on Saturday September 15 SCP is holding Super Clash X, with a stunner of a main event. For the first time ever, we’ll see former Japanese and WCW Legend Ultimo Dragon face off against one of the hottest indie stars in the world, Penta El 0M (aka Pentagon Jr).

A 31-year veteran of the pro wrestling business and an absolute legend, Ultimo Dragon has returned to North America in the past several months, after working primarily in Japan with All Japan, Michinoku Pro, DDT Pro, and other Japanese promotions for the last decade. He’s been working the UK scene the past five years, working with the likes of IPW:UK, Preston City Wrestling (PCW), RevPro, and Southside Wrestling Entertainment (SWE), but he had been shying away from North America, following huge runs in the likes of WCW, WWE, CMLL and others. He returned last year, working F1RST, All American Wrestling (AAW) and Pro Wrestling Revolution (PWR), and this year he’s added more US dates throughout the year, including matches against Joey Janela this summer for Wrestle Pro, Shane Strickland in Next Generation Wrestling (NGW), and Mike Quackenbush with F1RST, and it continues on Saturday with a huge match against Penta El 0M.

A former 2x WCW Cruiserweight Champion and 2x WCW World Television Champion, Ultimo Dragon will be accompanied on Saturday by his former WCW manager, Sonny Onoo. He’s also a 5x Universal Wrestling Association (UWA) World Middleweight Champion in Mexico, All Japan World Junior Heavyweight Champion, and former J-Crown Champion (where he famously held ten titles at once).

Whether he goes by Penta El 0M or Pentagon Jr., there’s no mistaking the man behind the mask who has zero fear. Penta is currently featured on three weekly televised wrestling programs – Lucha Underground on El Rey Network on Wednesdays, IMPACT Wrestling on PopTV on Thursdays, and Major League Wrestling (MLW) Fusion on BeIN Sports on Fridays – where he’s a main eventer for all three. A former IMPACT World Heavyweight Champion, he’s also the current reigning Lucha Underground Champion (as Pentagon Dark), 2x PCW ULTRA Heavyweight Champion, and a former AAA Latin America Champion, AAW Heavyweight Champion, and The Crash Lucha Cruiserweight Champion. Alongside his brother Fenix (or Rey Fenix) as The Lucha Brothers, they’re also dominating the tag team divisions around the world – they’re the current reigning MLW World Tag Team Champions and the Wrestling Alliance Revolution (WAR) Tag Team Champions out of Ecuador, South America, as well as former Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) World Tag Team Champions.
