Preview: WWE United Kingdom Championship Special (6/18 & 6/19/2018)

Tonight is the tonight. In London, England, at the legendary Royal Albert Hall, WWE will be filming their second WWE UK Championship Special, this time a two night affair. While the event will be taped tonight and tomorrow in London, it is set to air on the WWE Network on June 25 and 26. Here’s a look at the confirmed matches for tonight and tomorrow’s events.

NXT head honcho (and overseer for the WWE United Kingdom brand) Triple H will be joined by Shawn Michaels to address the UK crowd tonight. Triple H has mentioned an announcement will be made tonight in regards to the WWE and UK brand, with many assuming it’s in regards to a start date for the UK brand’s own show, thanks in part to the recent flurry of WWE UK deals and recent announcement of UK wrestling legend Johnny Saint as the UK brand General Manager. If it’s not made tonight, Triple H could make the announcement on a more public forum, as he’s slated to appear on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday morning.

The WWE UK Championship Tournament

The meat of the special is the ongoing tournament to crown a UK indie contender for Pete Dunne’s WWE UK Championship. Round one was completed last week at the Download Festival, and the matches were posted on WWE’s YouTube page throughout the week. Heading into tonight, the remaining matches will take place tonight, with the winner going on to face Dunne tomorrow night.

Four of the best women in the European wrestling scene – Australia’s Toni Storm, Portugal’s Killer Kelly, Scotland’s Isla Dawn and England’s Jinny – will compete in a fatal four way match on Night One, with the winner advancing to face NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler tomorrow at Night Two.

The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong) vs. British Strong Style (Pete Dunne, Trent Seven & Tyler Bate)

In a story straight out of NXT, the trio of WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne and Moustache Mountain‘s Trent Seven and Tyler Bate – collectively known in the UK as British Strong Style – will face off against Undisputed Era in a 6-man tag team match. Dunne has had his issues with Undisputed Era for months now, leading to Roderick Strong‘s turn on Dunne in the Dusty Rhodes Classic, where the former ROH World Champion joined his Ring of Honor brothers. Dunne has recruited his lads from the UK to face the Undisputed Era in what should be an astounding matchup.

NXT North American Championship: Adam Cole (c) vs. Wolfgang

NXT North American Champion Adam Cole will be defending his title on Night Two against Scotland’s Wolfgang. Wolfgang was a stand out at last year’s WWE UK tournament and has appeared for NXT over the past year and several WWE/NXT Live Events in the UK and US. Wolfgang may not be as recognizable to the WWE Universe as British Strong Style, but he’s no slouch – he’s an extremely athletic man for his size and he’s a former ICW World Heavyweight Champion.

NXT Women’s Championship: Shayna Baszler (c) vs. ??

After a grueling title defense against Scotland’s Nikki Cross this past Saturday at NXT Takeover: Chicago II, Baszler heads to Europe where she’ll face either Toni Storm, Jinny, Isla Dawn or Killer Kelly on Night Two.

Aleister Black & Ricochet vs. EC3 & Velveteen Dream

Ricochet and Velveteen Dream were easily one of the highlights of Saturday’s NXT Takeover: Chicago II and their story continues into Europe. On Night Two, Ricochet will team up with NXT Champion Aleister Black to face Velveteen Dream and his partner, EC3.

WWE United Kingdom Championship: Pete Dunne (c) vs. ??

In the main event, WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne puts his 395 day reign as champ on the line as he faces off against the eventual winner of the UK tournament.

NOTE: The WWE will most likely announce other matches for Night Two featuring other tournament competitors, but haven’t so as not to spoil the tournaments outcome.
