It appears that injuries may end up shutting down one of WWE’s longest running storylines of the past year before it reaches its final chapter and it won’t be because of lack of faith. It’s being reported by Wrestling Observer Radio that Jason Jordan‘s neck issues are increasing and he may require neck surgery to fix the issues. The injury is said to be similar to that of Chris Benoit‘s, which forced him to miss an entire year from 2001 and 2002 (missing the entire WCW/ECW Invasion angle) and Arn Anderson‘s, which forced his retirement in 1997.
Jason Jordan has been a polarizing character in the WWE Universe since he came over to Raw from Smackdown to become Kurt Angle‘s illegitimate “son” effectively ending American Alpha as a tag team. His character has progressed slowly, first as an overexcited man who wanted to bond with and impress his new father, into a spoiled brat who was exercising his influence over his new dad to insert himself into matches that character-wise, he just wasn’t ready for. But during it all, Jordan began to showcase more and more of his skills in the ring, with lengthy matches against the likes of Roman Reigns, John Cena and The Miz. Jordan’s character took a further shift when he was paired with Seth Rollins after Dean Ambrose‘s injury, with Jordan becoming more cocky in his swagger and ignoring the advice of his more seasoned veteran partner. The plan was for Jordan to turn heel on Rollins, with the feud culminating at WrestleMania 34, launching Jordan as a new top heel on Raw.
Jordan has been working with the neck issues for some time now and it’s been causing increasing numbness in his hands and arms – in order to protect him, it’s why Jordan had such a minor role in his Royal Rumble tag match and they dropped the tag titles back to The Bar. The injury must be significant if the WWE feels that putting them back on Sheamus – who has his own serious neck issues – is the safer option.
The WWE is exploring other options for Jordan, but it’s increasingly looking like he may indeed go under the knife to correct the issue properly. If the surgery is planned, expect Jordan to miss up to a year off as the recovery time is a lengthy one.
