Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Patrick Onwuasor has signed with the New York Jets. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Onwuasor was looked at as at a potential in-house replacement to C.J. Mosley when the linebacker left the Ravens in free agency a year ago, but now he will be Mosley’s teammate again. He will be 28 years old at the start of the 2020 NFL regular season.

After spending parts of four years at Arizona and Portland State University, Onwuasor was signed by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft. He would get his first taste of NFL action when an injury to Mosley allowed the Ravens to promote Onwuasor to the 53-man roster. Head coach John Harbaugh would then keep Onwuasor on the first-team as the fifth linebacker for the remainder of the season.

Onwuasor had his best season in 2018, where he came up big in a number of crucial games. With the Ravens needing to go 6-1 to make the playoffs after Week 10, Onwuasor had game-sealing forced fumbles in two games — Week 13 and Week 16. He was also one of the Ravens’ best players in their 23-16 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Onwuasor finished 2018 playing 42% of defensive snaps and recorded 90 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, three pass defenses, and 12 quarterback hits.

In 2019, Onwuasor fell out of favor with the Ravens coaching staff. After a poor defensive showing to start the year, general manager Eric DeCosta made a number of large personnel changes to the team. Perhaps the biggest was to the linebacking corps. DeCosta shipped off Kenny Young to the Los Angeles Rams in the Marcus Peters trade and signed two new starters in the span of two weeks. This didn’t sit well with Onwuasor as he was reported to have gotten in an argument with coach Harbaugh at practice over his reduced playing time. L.J. Fort and Josh Bynes then became the Ravens’ go-to starting interior linebacking duo.

Onwuasor is known as being one of the most aggressive linebackers in football and should fit in well with the Jets.
