The NFL offseason technically begins in March when players out of contract with their current teams are free to negotiate with new clubs. NFL free agency begins on March 18 and some of the league’s biggest names will be able to search for new deals and teams. New players can certainly change a team’s outlook for the new season. Fans are anticipating where the league’s top free agents will land and debating which teams will benefit the most. The 2020 NFL offseason may be the most significant the league has seen in decades. Some legends could wind up in new places and there is no shortage of top quarterbacks available to teams. The quarterback position has never been as deep in a free agent market as it is this offseason.
NFL Free Agents Possibly on the Move
Philip Rivers – LA Chargers
Philip Rivers has been the face of the Chargers franchise in two different cities. He has played a decade and a half for the team but is likely to move away from the Bolts in 2020. Rivers is an eight-time Pro Bowl player and plenty of teams seeking veteran leadership will be happy to snap up the 38-year-old. Despite his age, Rivers threw for 4,615 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2019. However, Rivers did post the worst quarterback rating of his career at 48.9. That rating could be down to the Chargers as a team rather than the quarterback.
Marcus Mariota – Tennessee Titans
Marcus Mariota was the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Five seasons later, Mariota is destined to leave the franchise he was expected to lead for years to come. Tennessee dropped Mariota halfway through the 2019 season in favor of Ryan Tannehill. The former Miami Dolphin now has the keys to the Titans’ offense. Mariota has been on a steady decline since 2016. The quarterback threw for more than 3,400 yards and 26 touchdowns. Since then, his touchdown totals over the last three seasons have been 13,11, and seven.
Tom Brady – New England Patriots
Tom Brady exiting the New England Patriots is akin to Joe Montana leaving the San Francisco 49ers in 1993. Reports have already claimed Brady is likely to go and the Patriots want a far more mobile quarterback for the future. Brady has been New England’s No. 1 for 20 years. Now, 42-years-old, it is time to search for a new signal-caller. Regardless of who the Pats play at quarterback, the answer to the biggest question in football will be answered. Is Brady the greatest or was it Bill Belichick’s system all along?
Teddy Bridgewater – New Orleans Saints
With Drew Brees still the man in New Orleans, Teddy Bridgewater is set to leave the Big Easy for pastures new. The Chargers are interested but Bridgewater could be Brady’s heir apparent in New England. Bridgewater showed just how good and ready he is to be a regular NFL starter once more. Last season, Bridgewater led New Orleans to five wins as Brees was sidelined with an injury. Could the Saints regret sticking with the aging Brees?
