Jacoby Brissett

Jacoby Brissett Out, Brian Hoyer to Start for Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have officially announced that quarterback Jacoby Brissett will not play in Week 10’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Brissett suffered an MCL injury and, although he practiced in limited fashion, will have to miss at least one game due to the injury. In his place, journeyman backup Brian Hoyer shall earn the start under center. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news.

Jacoby Brissett Ruled Out, Brian Hoyer to Start for Indianapolis Colts

Jacoby Brissett became the Colts starter just weeks before the beginning of the regular season. Following Andrew Luck‘s surprise retirement, Brissett became “the guy” for the first time since 2017. He’s performed admirably in his eight starts, going 5-3 while completing 64.8% of his passes for 1,649 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. His advanced numbers tell a similar story, as Brissett is 13th in Football Outsiders DYAR, 12th in DVOA, and 19th in ESPN’s QBR.

Taking over the offense is longtime NFL veteran Brian Hoyer. Like Brissett, Hoyer started his NFL career backing up Tom Brady with the New England Patriots. However, unlike Brissett, Hoyer has bounced around the league and played for seven different teams. Throughout the course of his career, Hoyer has completed 59.5% of his passes for 10,070 yards, 51 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. He’s 16-21 in his 37 career starts, but notably went 10-6 over in two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. During that same timeframe, all other Browns quarterbacks went 1-15.

Even without Brissett, the Colts should be favored to win this one. Hoyer is a competent backup and the Colts face off against a subpar Miami Dolphins unit. Even after recording their first win, the Dolphins are still no match for the Colts. Interestingly enough, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores also comes from the New England Patriots organization. Flores served as the de-facto defensive coordinator for the 2018 Patriots and faced off against Hoyer every day in practice throughout the 2018 season.
