New York Jets Fire Todd Bowles

The writing has been on the wall, but the New York Jets officially parted ways with head coach Todd Bowles after four years, per Field Yates. Bowles piloted the Jets to a 4-12 record during 2018, bringing his career record with New York to 24-40.

New York Jets Fire Todd Bowles After Four Seasons

Interestingly enough, this move comes one year after the Jets organization extended both Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan. However, the disappointing season clearly was enough for Jets owner Woody Johnson to part ways with the head coach. Bowles best season with New York came back in 2015 when he guided New York to a 10-6 record during his first year at the helm.

However, Bowles has struggled ever since that magical campaign. Since 2016, Bowles never won more than five games in a single season, finishing last in the AFC East for three straight years. While nobody expected him to usurp Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, Bowles should have made the Jets better than an annual bottom feeder.

Prior to joining the New York Jets, Bowles served as defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals. Working under head coach Bruce Arians, Bowles captained a defense which ranked top-seven in points allowed during both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. While this was his first time with the full-time role, it wasn’t his time with the title. Back in 2012, Bowles served as the interim defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles following the firing of longtime head coach Andy Reid.

Bowles first entered the NFL as an undrafted safety back in the 1986 season. An eight-year NFL veteran, Bowles played in 117 career games while recording 15 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries. Bowles played before tackles became a quantifiable statistic, so nobody knows exactly how many he recorded throughout his career.
