According to Adam Schefter, center Weston Richburg will sign a five-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers when free agency opens. The 26-year-old spent the first four seasons of his career with the New York Giants.

San Francisco 49ers to Sign Weston Richburg

Weston Richburg played just four games in 2017 until a puzzling concussion issue ended his season. He suffered the head injury in an October 1st game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Giants placed him on injured reserve on November 4th. Richburg claims that he was cleared from concussion protocol weeks before the season was over, and he was not thrilled that the team made the injured reserve deserve so quickly. Perhaps the Giants were encouraged by the play of backup center Brett Jones and wanted to give him more playing time.

Richburg hasn’t had an extensive injury history, missing only one game in the three seasons prior to 2017. He has never played in a Pro Bowl or earned All-Pro honors, but he is certainly an above-average center.

Due to a number of injuries along the Giants offensive line, Richburg was forced to play guard during his rookie season. Predictably, he struggled immensely. He returned to his natural center position in 2015, where he became one of the best in the game.

The Giants drafted Richburg in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was the eighth offensive lineman selected in the draft.

Richburg played his collegiate ball at Colorado State. He earned All-Mountain West honors three times as a member of the Rams.

He grew up in Bushland, Texas, where he attended Bushland High School. He was a two-sport star, thriving in football and track. He played on both sides of the line in football and won the state title in the shot put event in 2009 when he set a school record with a throw of 18.34 meters. He was a two-star recruit coming out of high school according to Rivals.com.
