The Miami Dolphins have extended the contract of defensive end Cameron Wake. The extension is for two years and worth $19 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. $11 million of that is guaranteed.

Miami Dolphins Defensive End Cameron Wake Signs Two-Year Extension
Before signing the big deal, Wake was entering the final season of his contract. He would had made just $7 million in 2017 had he waited for his contract to expire.
Wake is coming off a great 2016 season. He recorded 11.5 sacks and one interception. The 11.5 sacks had him finish tied for sixth in the league with Cliff Avril of the Seattle Seahawks.
This performance comes after he missed half of the 2015 season with a torn Achilles. He suffered the injury on Oct. 30, 2015 during a Thursday night game against the New England Patriots.
Miami got off to a 1-4 start to the 2016 season, then went on to win six in a row and nine of their eleven games. That was good enough to earn them the final wild card spot in the AFC. Unfortunately, a 30-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers ended their season.
Wake wound up being a huge part to the Dolphins’ defensive success during that win streak. 7.5 sacks came in those six games.
Wake played his college football at Penn State. He went undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft, but was drafted by the New York Giants in April. His time didn’t last long there, getting released shortly thereafter.
After a couple of years away from the game, Wake joined up with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in May 2007. He earned several awards during his years there, ignoring two-time CFL All-Star and CFL Most Outstanding Rookie of the Year in 2007.
The Dolphins signed Wake in 2009. Since then, he has recorded 231 total tackles and 81.5 sacks. His career high in tackles (48) came in 2010. His career high in sacks (15) came in 2012.
