Kansas City Chiefs Organization Could Face Civil Suit In Britt Reid Crash

Britt Reid was officially charged with DWI following the February 4th crash, and the Kansas City Chiefs could be part of the lawsuit.

The Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office officially charged former Kansas City Chiefs coach Britt Reid with DWI following a February crash which left a five-year old girl critically injured. Reid is currently staring down up to seven years in prison, and the Kansas City Chiefs organization as a whole may be included in a civil suit. Reid claimed that “he had left work” prior to the crash, meaning that the Chiefs could very well be liable for financial compensation in a potential suit.

Britt Reid Crash: Kansas City Chiefs Might Have to Pay Damages In Civil Suit

According to @SportsLawLust, the Kansas City Chiefs could be held partially responsible for Reid’s actions due to the doctrine of “respondeat superior”. This doctrine essentially states that an employer can be held liable for their employees actions, if said action was performed within the course of their employment. Because Reid said he was on his way back from work, the Kansas City Chiefs become partially responsible for his actions. In simpler terms, the Chiefs will have to pay for whatever Reid is physically incapable of paying. Nobody is going to jail for Reid’s actions (outside of possibly Reid himself), but the organization as a whole could have to pay a portion of the damages to the family of the injured girl.

For those unaware, back in February, former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid made the incredibly irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Reid’s reckless conduct led to a crash that put a five-year old girl into a coma. While she eventually awoke, she suffered permanent brain damage from Reid’s atrocious mistake. Prosecutors officially charged Reid with DWI-Serious Physical Injury, which carries a potential sentence of one to seven years in prison. After the crash, Reid posted a blood alcohol concentration of 0.113%, well above the legal limit of 0.08%.
