Journeyman NFL quarterback Taylor Heinicke signed a two-year, $8.75million contract with the Washington Football Team. Heinicke has spent the last five years of his NFL career with five NFL teams, most recently the Washington Football Team. He spent the 2019 season to play in the XFL for the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Taylor Heinicke, Washington Football Team, Agree to Contract
Taylor Heinicke was the fourth-string quarterback for the Washington Football Team during the 2020 Season. He sat behind Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins, and Kyle Allen. However, when the Washington Football Team was ready for their home Wild Card playoff game, Alex Smith was injured, Dwayne Haskins was released, and Kyle Allen was also injured. This left no one but Heinicke to start that game for them.
As the starter in the Wild Card Game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Heinicke was not expected to put up great numbers. As a fourth string quarterback and former XFL quarterback, expectations were low for him. However, Heinicke went out and did his best. He threw for 307 yards, one touchdown and one interception. In addition, he had a spectacular touchdown run that impressed many.
Heinicke led the Washington Football Team to a near comeback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, set up by his touchdown run. He also delivered an excellent touchdown pass to Steven Sims, again impressing many. Although the Washington Football Team ultimately lost the game with a score of 31-23, Heinicke left a good impression. His teammate, Terry McLaurin, the Washington Football Team’s No.1 reciever, had a good opinion on him as well. “I’d take number 4 [Heinicke] on my team any day and twice on Sundays,” he told an interviewer. “I hope we’re teammates in the future.” McLaurin caught six passes for 75 yards from Heinicke in their loss to the Buccaneers.
Heinicke was undrafted out of Old Dominion in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was signed to several teams, moving around frequently. He was traveling to several different teams until he went to the XFL, where he did not play a single snap for the St. Louis Battlehawks. Eventually, he signed to the Washington Football Team’s practice squad, in December 2020.
