New Orleans is currently preparing for the upcoming season, but a Saints trade could be on the horizon. After years of treading water, the team finally embraced the inevitable rebuild last year and is ahead of schedule in its quest to return to contention. Despite a slow start to the 2025 season, the team came alive down the stretch and finished the season with an 8-9 record, largely thanks to the emergence of second-round pick Tyler Shough. The Louisville quarterback is no Drew Brees, but the rookie looked like the real deal and could develop into a legitimate franchise quarterback if he continues to develop.
One of the best ways to ensure a quarterback reaches his potential is to surround him with reliable pass-catching weapons. New Orleans already has a proven WR1 in Chris Olave and an exciting rookie in Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson, but they might add another body to the room. In a recent article by Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton, the NFL analyst made his case for why the Saints should trade for wide receiver Josh Palmer.
“The Saints can reunite Palmer with head coach Kellen Moore, who called plays for the Los Angeles Chargers when the wideout caught 38 passes for 581 yards and two touchdowns in 2023,” Moton writes. “New Orleans can bring him in as veteran insurance if there are concerns about rookie first-rounder Jordyn Tyson’s durability.”
Saints Trade Rumors: Josh Palmer Tied to New Orleans
On the one hand, Saints trade theories are always interesting, and every team in the league should be doing what they can to bolster their roster at this point in the offseason. On the other hand, if the Saints are going to make a move for another receiver, they’d probably aim for someone a little bit better than Palmer.
While the speedy wide receiver had a good season with Kellen Moore and the Rams, he didn’t do much of anything last year. Appearing in 12 games while making eight starts, the wideout finished the season with just 22 receptions for 303 yards and no touchdowns despite having no real target competition on Buffalo’s bleak depth chart. Quite frankly, the Bills could cut him before the start of the year if he can’t beat out Keon Coleman and fourth-round pick Skyler Bell.
If New Orleans has their heart set on Josh Palmer, then perhaps they could trade a conditional seventh-round pick for his services. However, there are better options on the free agent market. Stefon Diggs had 1,000 yards with MVP runner-up Drake Maye last year, and he’s still available. Meanwhile, guys like Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel have lost a step, but they’re still better than Palmer.
While anything is possible, this potential Saints trade seems unlikely.
