After hinting at retirement following their Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, superstar tight end Travis Kelce has decided to play one more season. The future Hall of Famer has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past 10 seasons and will go down in history as one of the greatest players at his position.
Travis Kelce Announces Retirement Decision
Despite being a future Hall of Famer, the 2024 season was arguably the worst of Kelce’s career since he became a regular starter. Starting and appearing in 16 games, the 12-year veteran finished the season with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns while helping the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season. While these numbers are impressive, his yardage and touchdowns were the lowest since his injury-plagued rookie campaign.
Travis Kelce originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Selected by the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cincinnati product spent most of his rookie season battling injury, appearing in just one game without recording a single reception.
Despite the slow start, Kelce broke out in Year 2. Serving as a reliable target for veteran Alex Smith, the tight end recorded 67 receptions for 862 yards and five touchdowns. Despite beating the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks – the two teams who competed in the Super Bowl – the Chiefs missed the playoffs.
This breakout season led to one of the all-time great runs of tight-end play in league history. Since 2014, Travis Kelce made the Pro Bowl in each of the next 10 seasons while earning First-Team All-Pro honors four times and winning three Super Bowls.
Since entering the league, Travis Kelce has recorded 1,004 receptions for 12,151 yards and 77 touchdowns. Off the field, the tight end has become a popular celebrity thanks to his relationship with musical icon Taylor Swift.
