Klint Kubiak Offensive Coordinator

Saints Lose Promising Coach to Seattle Seahawks

Klint Kubiak will not return to the New Orleans Saints, as Mike Macdonald has reportedly hired him to be the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Kubiak, the son of the Super Bowl-winning coach, came through the ranks with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco but first started calling plays last year with the Saints.

Saints Lose Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak to Seahawks

Through the first two weeks of the season, Klint Kubiak looked like the next great offensive coordinator. Replacing Pete Carmichael’s bland and unimaginative scheme, Kubiak brought a much-needed breath of fresh air to the offense. The Saints scored 47 and 44 points in the first two weeks of the season, respectively, as Kubiak’s scheme overcame a weak offensive line and had quarterback Derek Carr playing the best football of his career.

Unfortunately, the magic couldn’t last, as the Saints crashed and burned down the stretch. While some could blame Kubiak for the late-season collapse, an absurd amount of injuries decimated the Saints roster. With Derek Carr, Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and effectively every offensive lineman missing a substantial period of time, Kubiak struggled to design an offense around fifth-round rookie Spencer Rattler and journeyman wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Despite his largely successful debut as a playcaller, the Saints lost Klint Kubiak largely due to their own head coaching search. After firing Dennis Allen midway through the season, New Orleans is the only team that has yet to hire a new head coach. Kubiak presumably would have listened to an offer to stay, but seeing as the Saints don’t have a coach, he would have been foolish to pass on a known opportunity.

Klint Kubiak replaces Ryan Grubb after one season as Seattle’s offensive coordinator. Best known for his time as offensive coordinator at the University of Washington, Grubb’s scheme didn’t quite translate to the professional level, and head coach Mike Macdonald looked for a more updated passing attack for Geno Smith, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and popular trade candidate D.K. Metcalf.
