NFL News: New England Patriots Aren’t “Serious Suitors” In Carson Wentz Trade

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is on his way out of town, but he won’t be going to the New England Patriots. According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Patriots are not considered “serious suitors” for the former second-overall pick. According to other reports around the league, the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts are currently frontrunners for Wentz’ services.

Report: New England Patriots Not “Serious Suitors” In Carson Wentz Trade

Carson Wentz is coming off what is easily the worst season of his career. After working with an admittedly weak supporting cast, the former first-round pick completed just 57.4% of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He also took 50 sacks, fumbled 10 times, and got benched for rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts by the end of the season. While he’s normally not THIS bad, there is no denying that Wentz has not been anything more than a league-average quarterback since his fantastic 2017 season.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired head coach Doug Pederson after the season and brought aboard Nick Sirianni as his replacement. While Wentz and Pederson had a rough relationship, the coaching change apparently didn’t do enough to make Wentz want to stick around. The quarterback requested a trade and the team has reportedly obliged. While the trade is not yet official, most league sources believe the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts are the frontrunners for Wentz’ services. The Eagles reportedly want to receive a package similar to what the Lions received for Matthew Stafford, although only time will tell if they can actually make that happen.

New England’s lack of interest in Carson Wentz means that they’ll need to continue their search for the next quarterback. Cam Newton did the best he could in a terrible situation, but most league sources believe that New England is looking for an upgrade. Assuming Newton isn’t their first choice, the Patriots could pursue veteran quarterbacks like Ryan Fitzpatrick or Jameis Winston in free agency. Additionally, they could try their luck in the 2021 NFL Draft.
