Logan Ryan Extension Was A Christmas Miracle

Logan Ryan Extension Is A Miracle: Defensive back Logan Ryan will be a key player for New York for the next three years.
Logan Ryan Extension

Late on Christmas morning, Ian Rapoport tweeted that the New York Giants and defensive back Logan Ryan agreed on a three-year, $31 million contract extension with $20 million guaranteed. Ryan was a late-offseason addition, signing with New York in August. Since then, the 29-year-old cornerback turned safety is lighting it up for the Giants defense. Ryan is having one of the best years of his career, and his extension was a Christmas miracle for the Giants and fans everywhere.

Ryan’s 2020 Season

In 14 games this season, Ryan has played exceptionally well and has become a true leader of this developing defense. In the offseason, he decided to market himself as a safety since the market had been dry in terms of a contract. After betting on himself, Ryan had been leading the league in Pro Bowl votes at the free safety position, until Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs came in at the last minute and won.

Nonetheless, that does not take away from Ryan’s incredible season. He has totaled 83 tackles, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and one interception. More than anything, Ryan’s knack for creating turnovers has been evident. In Week 9 at Washington, he forced a fumble early in the game and later recorded his first interception of the season. Ryan’s stellar defensive effort helped New York earn their second win of the season, and sparked their four-game winning streak through the month of November into December.

That Washington game was special for Ryan, as in the same week his wife, Ashley, almost died due to an ectopic pregnancy.

“My wife ended up going to the ER, and they ended up catching (an) ectopic pregnancy, where the egg was in the wrong place in her fallopian tube and it was about to burst,” Ryan said to the Giants website. “She ended up going into emergency surgery. … They ended up saving her and ended up preventing a lot of what could have been done. That was a trainer on our team, Justin Maher, telling my wife to go to the ER at 1 AM and could have saved her life or saved a lot of internal bleeding there. That’s the type of organization we have here. My kids are okay, my wife is recovering well, she’s okay.”

Thankful that Ashley Ryan ended up recovering fully from that medical scare. After his interception in Washington, Ryan turned to the cameras and said, “That one’s for my wife.”

According to Art Stapleton, bringing back Ryan was a priority for Joe Judge and New York’s coaching staff. As it shows on and off the field, Ryan loves playing for Judge and appreciates the family-like feeling.

Logan Ryan Extension Shows He Belongs in New York

Logan Ryan coming back home to New Jersey to play for his hometown team just felt like the perfect fit from the beginning. In his first year with the Giants, Ryan clearly has not disappointed, as he has won over the coaches with his play. Also worth noting, Ryan has quickly become a fan-favorite. There is no doubt that if the Giants have fans next year that the stands will be filled with a good amount of 23 jerseys.

“I just wanted to prove to the fan base, the coaching staff, and my teammates what type of player and leader I can be,” Ryan said to Giants.com. “And I honestly think I was proving it to myself as well. This year has been about a lot of belief. I always believed in myself and held my head high and worked out for me in the end and it worked out for the team in the end. I think it was a perfect fit from the beginning.”

Ryan’s belief in himself paid off well, and he will be a key contributor to this Giants team through 2023.
