Cam Newton, New England Patriots Agree to Deal

Cam Newton spent the majority of the 2019 season on the injured reserve. After aggravating a preseason injury, the former first-overall pick started the first two games of the year. The results left something to be desired, as Newton completed just 56.2% of his passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and a 71.0 passer rating. Newton initially landed on the short-term injured reserve but never made it back onto the field during the 2019 campaign. Kyle Allen and Will Grier started the remainder of the season and the team signed Teddy Bridgewater to a massive deal in free agency.

Newton initially entered the NFL as the first-overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Selected by the Carolina Panthers, the Auburn product earned the Week 1 starting job and immediately became one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the nation. During his first year under center, the rookie completed 60% of his passes for 4,051 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. Additionally, Newton added an additional 706 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, the most ever by a quarterback.

Newton’s best season came during the 2015 campaign. Starting for the entire 16-game season, Newton completed 59.8% of his passes for 3,837 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while adding an additional 636 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Newton led the Panthers to a 15-1 record and Carolina’s first Super Bowl appearance since the 2003 season. While the Panthers fell short to the Denver Broncos, Newton still managed to win First-Team All-Pro honors and league MVP.

Throughout the course of his career, Cam Newton has completed 59.6% of his passes for 29,041 yards, 182 touchdowns, and 108 interceptions. Additionally, the one-time MVP also has 4,806 rushing yards and 58 rushing touchdowns to his name.
