New York Giants Training Camp Sees Starting Cornerback Job on the Line
For the 2026 season, only one cornerback is penciled in for a starting role. Paulson Adebo signed a three-year, $54 million contract ahead of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old started all 12 games he appeared in last season. He missed five games in 2025 due to a sprained MCL. Adebo is New York’s top cornerback in 2026, but the team is still wondering who will be their second starting cornerback with training camp starting in a few weeks.
Recently, Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan noted that veteran Greg Newsome II is the “early favorite” to earn a starting role in 2026. Newsome signed a one-year, $3 million deal with New York. It’s essentially a prove-it deal for Newsome. If he plays well, the team might invest in him long-term. Additionally, the Giants have a rookie cornerback who will compete for a starting role in 2026.
Colton Hood was selected in the second round in 2025 out of Tennessee. Hood grew up learning from former NFL players and has a bright future ahead of him. His uncle Roderick played for Coach Harbaugh. He taught his nephew how to play cornerback at a high level.
On top of that, Hood learned from former All-Pro Patrick Peterson and still calls him a mentor to this day. Can the 21-year-old make an immediate impact? Raanan also mentioned that former first-round pick Deonte Banks and veteran Art Green have an outside chance to compete for a starting role in 2026.
Which wide receivers will have the most competiton at training camp?
The average 53-man roster carries five to six wide receivers. Before the New York Giants training camp begins, there are already five wide receivers who are locks to make the roster. This includes Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin and Malachi Fields. However, New York has another four to five wide receivers who will be competing to make the roster in 2026.
Odell Beckham Jr., Juju Smith-Schuster, Isaiah Hodgins and Braxton Berrios are all currently with New York this offseason. However, chances are that one, maybe two of them will be on the 53-man roster come Week 1. Beckham Jr. is a fan-favorite, and it’s been speculated for years that he would make a return to New York. The 33-year-old has an uphill battle, but still has an opportunity to finish his career where it all started.
Smith-Schuster is another veteran receiver with hopes to extend his playing career. He spent three of the last four seasons on the Kansas City Chiefs. The 29-year-old has familiarity with Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. They spent a few seasons together with the Chiefs. Berrios could make the roster in 2026 as a special-teams contributor. Earlier in the offseason, punt returner Gunner Olzsweski suffered a torn Achilles. New York could use Berrios’ skills as a returner in 2026.
