Travis Benjamin Signs With San Francisco 49ers

Travis Benjamin had a very quiet season in 2019, but this was due in part to it being cut short by injury. He got put on injured reserve with a quad injury after only five weeks. But in that time he had only brought in six catches for 30 yards. Despite the Chargers giving him a one-year extension the prior off-season, he ended up not being a big part of the game plan at all.

Benjamin played college football with the Miami Hurricanes for four years. In 2012, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns. He remained there through 2015. There, he spent time as both a starting wide receiver and as a kick/punt returner. He had three punt returns for touchdowns during his time with the Browns.

He was primarily a role player his first three years, not exceeding 314 receiving yards. However, he broke out in 2015, finishing with 966 yards and five touchdowns. That remains his best career season thus far. This allowed him to get a decent price on the market, which resulted in him signing with the Chargers in 2016.

With the Chargers, Benjamin’s primary role was the deep ball/speed threat for the team, which he often shared with Tyrell Williams. His best season with them was in 2016, where everyone got more reps due to Keenan Allen missing almost the whole season. Benjamin had 677 yards and four touchdowns that year. He was productive in 2017 as well, getting over 500 yards. He didn’t do much in 2018, but he did have two critical catches on the final drive of a primetime late-season win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Thus far in his career, he has 208 receptions for 3,143 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also has 1,674 total return yards – 1,189 as a punt returner and 485 as a kick returner. He has four career punt return touchdowns.
