Josh Gordon Is Stepping Away From Football

Josh Gordon announced on Thursday that he will be stepping away from football due to an ongoing battle with mental health.

The New England Patriots have had a rough couple of weeks. Following a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the feeling like the dynasty was over permeated the national media. After losing Josh Gordon, it’s only going to get worse.

Gordon, who has struggled to stay sober in the past and missed 43 games with the Cleveland Browns over three seasons, is reportedly facing an indefinite suspension for violating terms of reinstatement under the league’s substance abuse policy. Today he announced he is taking time off to work on his mental health.

Josh Gordon Steps Away From Football to Focus on Health

The Patriots made a trade with the Browns in September to acquire Gordon. New England gave up very little in the trade, sending only a fifth round pick in next year’s NFL draft.

Josh Gordon provided a reliable deep target for Tom Brady and the Patriots, who were severely lacking in the deep threat department prior to his arrival. In 11 games with New England, Gordon caught 40 passes for 720 yards and three touchdowns.

The Patriots knew the risks when they traded for Gordon. The trade agreement provided a clause that the Patriots would receive a seventh-round pick from the Browns if Gordon were active for fewer than 10 games. As Gordon was active for 11 games with New England, the Patriots will not receive that pick.

New England’s offense was already struggling with inconsistencies with Josh Gordon, particularly in the red zone. They will need unbelievable boosts from Julian EdelmanRob GronkowskiCordarrelle Patterson, and Phillip Dorsett if the Pats hope to remain contenders.

Wide receiver Chris Hogan will likely pick up the reigns as the Patriots primary deep target in the absence of Gordon. Hogan was good for a 63 yard touchdown in Pittsburgh, however it was only made possible by the Steelers secondary triple-teaming Gordon.

Josh Gordon stepping away is a stark reminder that life is more important than football. The Patriots will feel the effects of that.
