New York Jets Reach Agreement With First Round Pick Jamal Adams

The New York Jets officially signed safety Jamal Adams to his four-year rookie contract on Thursday night, ending the possibility of him holding out.

The New York Jets will go into training camp not having to worry about a holdout from their marquee pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Rookie safety Jamal Adams came to an agreement with the team on his first ever pro contract Thursday night. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, his four-year fully guaranteed rookie deal is worth a total of $22.3 million and contains a $14.3 million signing bonus.

The Jets took Adams with the sixth pick of this year’s draft. He joins a secondary looking to start afresh after last year’s disappointing campaign marked by a huge regression from the unit. The team parted ways with safeties Calvin Pryor and Marcus Gilchrist as well as cornerback Darrelle Revis in the off-season.

That precipitated a concerted effort to add depth via the draft. In addition to Adams, the Jets drafted safety Marcus Maye in the second round and also took a few late-round fliers in picking cornerbacks Jeremy Clark and Derrick Jones in the sixth round.

Expectations are that Adams will immediately make an impact in the Jets secondary. The LSU product impressed all throughout minicamp with more of the same likely heading into training camp and preseason. Both in college and early on into his professional career, coaches continue to tout not just his overall skill set but also his leadership.

Coming into Thursday, seven first round draft picks remained unsigned. That number decreased to five in the wake of both Adams inking a pact as well as Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Texas Tech product signed his rookie deal earlier in the day.

The next step in the process leading up to September 10th’s season opener on the road against the Buffalo Bills begins in slightly over a week’s time with the start of training camp. Rookies and veterans both begin reporting on July 28th with practices in Florham Park, NJ commencing a day later.
