New head coach Anthony Lynn didn’t comment on whether or not the team would place Williams on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list before training camp. He did say that Williams will be rehabbing while he’s not on the field.

“I’m not sure where he’s going to rehab, but I’m sure it’s going to be somewhere close,” Lynn said. “He’ll be in the neighborhood.”

Lynn also said that Williams missing practice for an extended period of time is affecting him keeping up.

“He’s getting behind, but the most important thing is to get him healthy and get him back to the football field,” Lynn reiterated. “I know he can help us win football games down the road.”

Lynn was not the only one concerned with Williams’ absence from physical activity. Keenan Allen also spoke on Williams missing practice.

“I think for the most part, he’s missing getting settled in,” Allen said on his new teammate. “It’s just understanding Philip [Rivers], understanding the offense and trying to get the confidence before training camp.”

“Mentally, I think he’s going to be solid,” he said. “He’s been in every meeting, been taking notes (and getting) mental reps. He just needs to take it day by day.”

Allen is looking for a bounce back season himself. He tore his ACL in Week 1 of the 2016 season.

Williams was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Clemson University. He was the second receiver to be drafted. Corey Davis was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the fifth overall pick

The Chargers open their season on Monday, September 11th against the Denver Broncos. The game will be played at the Sports Authority Field in Denver. It will be the second of two ESPN Monday Night Football games.
