Pittsburgh Steelers Safety Depth Chart Projections

  1. Mike Mitchell

The undisputed number one at the safety position is Mike Mitchell. Although Sean Davis had an impressive rookie season, Mitchell holds the experience and is the leader of the secondary. Mitchell will continue to fly around the field, and was, for the most part, dependable in 2016. He has taken Davis under his wing and become a mentor to the young safety. The Steelers will need Mitchell to have another solid year to help the young defenders mature.

2. Sean Davis

Last season, many were surprised by the level of play displayed by rookie Sean Davis. Davis and corner Artie Burns stepped up big in their rookie seasons to elevate the play on the defensive side. However, this was still not enough to get past the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game. Davis will need to mature more from last season and continue to make strides learning from fellow safety Mike Mitchell. Davis’ progression as a player is vital to the future success of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

3. Robert Golden

Entering his sixth season, it is safe to say Robert Golden will enter training camp as the Steelers’ third safety. Golden saw good playing time last season, starting seven games in the Steelers secondary. Golden will likely be the first safety on the field if Davis or Mitchell are injured, as he can play both free and strong safety. Golden was a reliable backup last season, and proved he can step in and keep the level of play the same. Because of this, Golden will almost certainly make the 53-man roster and expect to see playing time in 2017.

4. Jordan Dangerfield

Because of his impressive stint as a backup last year, Jordan Dangerfield falls in at number four on this projection for safeties. Dangerfield started two games last season as a backup, and performed rather well for a fourth safety. Entering his second season, however, Dangerfield will face stiff competition for the fourth safety spot on the roster. Because the Steelers look as if they will only keep four safeties on the 53 man roster, Dangerfield’s spot is up for competition. The competition will be even tighter with the signing of Daimion Stafford from Tennessee.

5. Daimion Stafford

As previously mentioned, the Steelers signed Daimion Stafford earlier in the offseason from the Tennessee Titans. Stafford will have to compete for a spot if he wishes to make the 53 man roster. Unlikely to pass Robert Golden, Stafford will likely be competing with Jordan Dangerfield for the final safety spot on the final roster. Stafford will be entering his fifth year, which may give him an edge over the second year Dangerfield. However, for now we have Dangerfield ahead of Stafford because of his work last season.

6. Jacob Hagen

Jacob Hagen has been on and off the Steelers roster for the past few years, and 2017 is looking like another year in the off category. At the beginning of the offseason, things looked good for Hagen. Things got especially better when the Steelers let Shamarko Thomas test free agency, opening the window for Hagen to compete with Jordan Dangerfield. However, the signing of Daimion Stafford almost guarantees Hagen will yet again miss the 53-man roster cut. However, Hagen is an injury away from the opportunity to compete for a roster spot.

7. Terrish Webb

Coming in at the seven spot is undrafted rookie Terrish Webb. Webb was signed after the draft as a hometown product from the University of Pittsburgh. His hometown roots extend even further, as he played high school football at Clairton High School in Clairton, PA. Although he will most likely not make the 53 man roster, Webb will compete at training camp and may find himself on the practice squad with the ability to work up in the future.
