Don’t Hate The Player, Hate The League He Plays In

Tom Brady's fifth Super Bowl makes him the greatest player in NFL history. Roger Goodell had a chance to stop it from happening and he didn't do it.

Outside of Vontaze Burfict, Tom Brady is my most disliked player in football. He cheated and got caught doing it. He and his coach, Bill Belichick, have been part of numerous scandals to the point where it’s hard to root for them.

But there isn’t a chance in hell that you can deny Tom Brady the title of “Greatest Player in NFL History”. The five Super Bowl titles speak for themselves. It’s more than any quarterback has ever won and he’s done it with the same team his entire career. This one coming at age 39. If the rumor about Brady sticking around for another 3-5 years is correct, he may threaten the Pittsburgh Steelers’ all time record by himself.

Don’t Hate The Player, Hate The League He Plays In

But I want to make a point that most people fail to bring themselves to see: Don’t hold anyone more accountable for letting Tom Brady win his fifth this season than commissioner Roger Goodell.

Remember, this is a league where it’s deemed more punishable to smoke weed than it is to physically assault your wife. Commissioner Goodell decided that a measly four game suspension for destroying your cell phone and ruining the integrity of the football game by deflating footballs is a fitting punishment.

By no means did Tom Brady break any federal laws with what he did. But wouldn’t you think that when it comes to punishments, the NFL would allow the federal court system to handle any lawful punishment themselves while the NFL handled any league rules that were broken?

This is where Goodell is at fault. If he puts his foot down and suspends Brady for the full season, the likelihood of them winning a Super Bowl with Jacoby Brisset or Jimmy Garoppolo is slim.

All of this probably sounds like sour apples coming from a Steeler fan who’s team got trounced, and rightfully so, by Brady’s Patriots just a few short weeks ago. It’s not.

The “Tom Brady Revenge Tour” made its final stop in Houston. Brady went into Super Bowl 51 realizing that it would cement his legacy as the best player of all time if he won. He did exactly what the best of all time would do. Hopefully Goodell is kicking himself in the rear end until next February for being the worst commissioner in all of pro sports.
