Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Denver Broncos Name Vance Joseph Head Coach

Vance Joseph has been hired to be the head coach of the Denver Broncos. He will look to lead them back to the playoffs after missing out in 2016.

The Denver Broncos have signed Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph as their new head coach. Gary Kubiak stepped down as head coach after the broncos missed the playoffs.

Joseph had been the Dolphins defensive coordinator for just one season. Before then, he was the defensive backs coach for the Cincinnati Bengals for three seasons.

“He has great leadership qualities and a strong vision of what it takes to win,” Broncos general manager John Elway said about Joseph on his Twitter page. Joseph also had an interview with the San Diego Chargers. He wound up postponing his trip to San Diego.

Miami’s defense allowed 23.8 points per game in 2016. That ranked 18th in the NFL. They also ranked 30th in allowing 140.4 rushing yards per game and 29th allowing 382.6 total yards per game.

While those stats aren’t that impressive, the Broncos defense is. They have several stars on that defense. Demarcus Ware has always been known as somewhat of a sack machine when healthy. Derek Wolfe recorded 51 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2016.

The linebackers are led by Brandon Marshall and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller. In the secondary, there is a lot of talent. Aqib Talib is a dirty player, but a great one, as well.

Chris Harris Jr is another stud in the Denver secondary. He recorded 63 tackles and two interceptions. With Joseph, a defensive-minded guy, as their head coach, they’ll look to be a better defense in 2017.

In 2016, Denver’s defense ranked in the bottom 20 in points allowed (20.8, 22nd), yards allowed (323.1, 27th), passing yards allowed (230.3, 22nd) and rushing yards allowed (92.8, 27th). That is a big reason in why they missed the playoffs.

Another reason is because Trevor Siemian is their quarterback. While he did well in 2016, he is not good enough to lead this team to the playoffs. It’s not known whether Denver will stick with Siemian or not. Joseph may want to give that some thought, however.
