Denver Broncos Head Coaching Candidates: Profile of Dave Toub

Denver Broncos Head Coaching Candidates: Profile of Dave Toub. The Broncos are in the midst of a head coaching search. Here is a look at Dave Toub.

As the Denver Broncos search for their new leader, Last Word On Sports will look at the men lucky enough to get an interview. The first interview went to Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator, Dave Toub. Toub is the least known of the candidates, but the below information will helps fans get to know the man who may be coaching the Broncos next season.

Denver Broncos Head Coaching Candidates: Profile of Dave Toub

Experience

Toub has been working as a special teams coordinator for 13 years now. As fans saw during the season, it seems natural that coordinators of all kinds transition to the head coaching position. When Gary Kubiak was unable to coach, the Broncos gave the interim designation to their own special teams coordinator, Joe DeCamillas.

Toub has been blessed with some of the most athletic returnmen during his nine years with the Chicago Bears and four years in Kansas City. Working with Devin Hester and Tyreek Hill would make any coach look like a genius, but Toub has also done a wonderful job committing to the less glamorous parts of special teams. A coach with Toub’s track record is a natural candidate for the Broncos  head coaching vacancy.

Although Toub would not be focused on special teams exclusively, it wouldn’t hurt to have another special teams mind like Toub’s on the Broncos staff since Denver struggled mightily in the return game this season. Additionally, Toub has worked in close quarters with numerous NFL head coaches throughout his career. In addition to his time with Lovie Smith and Andy Reid, Toub worked with coaches like Marty Mornhinweg and Dirk Koetter. This time with great coaches has undoubtedly allowed Toub to learn what it takes to succeed as an NFL head coach.

Impressive Interview

John Elway seemed to enjoy whatever he heard from Toub during the interview:

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet” data-lang=”en”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>Just wrapped up our interview with Dave Toub in KC. He’s a great coach &amp; person who has a very impressive track record with special teams.</p>&mdash; John Elway (@johnelway) <a href=”https://twitter.com/johnelway/status/817485847092150274″>January 6, 2017</a></blockquote>

Elway may have been putting on a front, but it’s easy to believe that he genuinely enjoyed his four hour meeting with the prospective head coach. This is uncharted territory for Elway because he didn’t expect to be searching for a coach this offseason.

Last Word

After the underwhelming performance in 2016, the Broncos can’t afford to take it slow with their search. The Broncos offense was disappointing, to say the least, which led many people to expect the Broncos to go with an offensive minded coach. Toub has the tools to be successful as an all-around coach.

Nobody the Broncos are going to hire will be a proven commodity as a head coach, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a guy like Toub get the job. Toub is established in the league and seems more than capable of being a head coach in the NFL. But there isn’t a ton of interest for his head coaching services, so he might jump at the chance to be a head coach in Denver. Toub will have another opportunity to display his coaching prowess on Sunday afternoon when the Chiefs take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
