Minnesota Wild and Calgary Flames Swing Offseason Trade

The Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild have made an offseason deal. Calgary and Minnesota have made the Blake Coleman trade, which also saw a couple of other players go the other way. Minnesota gets Coleman, who has 50 percent of his salary retained, and Olli Maatta. Calgary gets Jacob Middleton along with a 2029 2nd round pick, a 2027 3rd round pick, and 2028 4th round pick. This news was first broken by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friemdan.

Blake Coleman Trade Made Between the Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild

Coleman, who has been long the subject of rumours, is finally on his way out of Calgary. The two-time Stanley Cup winner is coming off a 20-goal season where he added 15 assists in 69 games. Calgary will retain $2.45 million of his current $4.9 million salary. Coleman will be entering the final year of his contract this season, but he will be on a contender.

Middleton was a staple of the Wild’s defence, but is now moving onto the Flames. The Wainwright, Alberta native is headed back to his home province. He only got two goals in 75 games last season. However, the 30-year-old is more known for his physical play and his veteran leadership.

The Flames also get some draft picks as general manager Craig Conroy continues to stockpile picks in the team’s rebuild. Calgary is hoping to be on the uptick when its new arena is ready to open.

What It Means

Coleman is a proven winner and does many things well on both ends of the ice. The Wild have designs on making a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Minnesota has plenty of big-ticket players that are on the roster. However, Coleman’s salary won’t take too much of a bite out of that.

Maatta will also be a good veteran defender for Minnesota. He can help fill out one of the better defensive groups in the Western Conference.

Middleton returns north of the border and can offer steady veteran leadership. He’s a good-sized defender and will be relied upon to anchor a defensive group that may be on the inexperienced side of things.
