Garnet Hathaway trade

Florida Panthers Acquire Depth Forward from Philadelphia Flyers

The Florida Panthers are continuing to make some offseason moves. News emerged that the Panthers have completed the Garnet Hathaway trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. Florida will get the rugged forward and a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick.

Philadelphia will also retain 50 percent of Hathway’s $2.4 million, as first reported by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. Florida will only have to pay $1.2 million in the final year of Hathaway’s contract.

Flyers pick up a 5th and a 4th for Garnet Hathaway (trade away a 6th, retain 50%).

Philadelphia Flyers Make Garnet Hathaway Trade with Florida Panthers

Hathaway has played for the Flyers, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames over his 11-year NHL career. The 34-year-old totaled one goal and two assists for three points in 66 games with the Flyers. He also supplied a goal and an assist in eight Stanley Cup Playoff games. The Naples, Florida native averaged 10 minutes, 24 seconds of ice time with Philadelphia. He had a Corsi for of 40.9 and a relative Corsi of -8.3.

The veteran forward has 76 goals and 76 assists for 163 points in 672 career games. Hathaway was undrafted free agent that signed with the Flames after a strong college hockey career at Brown University. He led the Flyers in hits with 252, which was good enough for ninth among all skaters in the league.

What It Means

The move adds more nastiness to a Florida club looking to get back into the playoffs after injuries were too much to overcome. Florida already added Brady Tkachuk the roster from the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.

However, Hathaway will add some bite to the bottom part of the lineup. He’ll fit into the bottom six and be able to throw his weight around.

This move also means that A.J. Greer will likely move on from the team. It seems that Greer will look to cash in on his success with a different team. However, Hathaway seems like a strong replacement.
