Report: Hurricanes Agrees to New Contract With Defenceman

Defenceman Sean Walker has himself a new contract. After splitting time between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Colorado Avalanche, he is now signing with the Hurricanes. Details are still to come, but that’s a great add for the club after losing Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei. After a standout year for both clubs, he gets a new deal.

Walker Signs Contract

Defensive Defenceman don’t get the recognition that they deserve, but they should. Walker is not going to light up the stats sheet like Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar, but he is however going to shutdown the opposing team. He is a big body, standing at 5’11 and weighing 195 pounds and plays a heavy game.

Between the Flyers and the Avalanche, Walker did score a career high ten goals and 29 points. Also, he is unafraid of physical play, as he threw 118 hits and also was a shot blocking machine (136). Walked can play on the penalty kill and has shown he can log second pair minutes. This is a tremendous asset on the back end and will be a key contributor as the team advances to next season.

What this Means for the Team

The Walker contract makes a ton of sense for both sides. Walker gets a deal where he knows he’s staying put and the team is getting a top four defenceman. Walker may not have the points, but he has shown flashes of offence. Primarily as a shutdown defenceman, he brings a much needed edge and grit to the lineup and can play in multiple situations. Walker was a great add on a playoff team in the Avalanche and is going to benefit this team as a contender. It is a great deal for both sides and should be beneficial in the long run.
