NHL Rumours: Update on Talks Between Dallas Stars & Jason Robertson

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours. We’re into the Stanley Cup Final, but there’s plenty of chatter surrounding the other teams that did not make the final. These clubs are already into the offseason but are already thinking about the future. However, these choices might require some roster management to clear out the adequate amount of salary cap space. The summertime is going to lead to some important choices from team executives.

One team that has to figure out things with a key player is the Dallas Stars. This edition of the NHL rumours has an update on where things stand with Dallas and young superstar Jason Robertson.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Latest Chatter Surrounding Jason Robertson and the Dallas Stars

Rumour: We provide an update on where negotiations are at between the Stars and Robertson. The California native is a restricted free agent in the coming off-season if he’s not re-signed.

Analysis: We keep hearing varying things regarding the young goalscorer. Let’s start with Emily Kaplan of ESPN, who does believe that Robertson will ink an extension to stay with the Stars. Some worried that the numbers wouldn’t line up, but Kaplan thinks that the 26-year-old will ultimately stay put. She did say that general manager Jim Nill‘s first priority is locking down Robertson.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period also stated there has been some forward progress in talks. Pagnotta said this in a recent edition of The Sheet with Jeff Marek. For Stars fans hoping for some good news, this is a positive.

However, Pagnotta made an appearance on Hello Hockey that said a handful of teams would be all over a trade should contract talks go nowhere. The insider mentioned the Chicago Blackhawks and the New Jersey Devils would be all over making a trade happen. Marek, who was on a recent edition of Sekeres & Price, also thinks that Chicago could be in on Robertson if a trade is needed.

There’s been plenty of speculation about the forward that will turn 27 next month. Keep with NHL rumours on Last Word on Hockey as we try to sort things out.

What It Means

At the end of the day, Robertson will have to sign a new contract if he’s traded or if he stays in Dallas. We also have recent information about what a contract could look like for Robertson.

There’s more clarity on what the cap number could look like for Robertson and it’s at least going to be eight figures. Insider Frank Seravalli said that the Stars and Robertson are still somewhat far away on hashing out a new deal. Seravalli added on a recent edition of The Big Show that Robertson’s cap is looking for around $14 million. This seems like a fair valuation, but the Stars are cash-strapped and have players like Jamie Benn, Vladislav Kolyachonok, and Mavrik Bourque as players that need new deals.

The salary cap is going up to $104 million for the 2026-27 season. However, the Stars only have $11 million in cap space with all of these players left to re-sign. We could see something like Tyler Seguin‘s contract try to be moved in order to clear out some space.

We could also see Robertson as the target of an offer sheet over the summer. The St Louis Blues were the last team to successfully pull off this trick when they got Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to twin offer sheets from the Edmonton Oilers. Robertson seems like the perfect target for an offer sheet, but teams would have to pay up. Anyone going over $11,939,166 will have to sacrifice first round picks in four of the next five drafts. It could be too much for a team needing an instant gamechanger.
