An Anaheim Ducks trade is happening. They have moved defenceman Cam Fowler at last. The long-time Duck is now gone from the only team he’s known since he was drafted 12th overall in 2010. Fowler is now a member of the St. Louis Blues. Going to the Blues is Fowler and a 2027 fourth round pick. The Ducks receive a 2027 second round pick and Jeremie Biakabatuka. Also, the Ducks are retaining $2.5 million of the remaining salary.
Cam Fowler Traded
Fowler jumped straight to the NHL and landed on both feet. A rookie season of 10 goals and 40 points for a 19-year-old defenceman portended a massive future. But those numbers proved hard to live up to. But he did reach 48 points in 2022-23, his career high. That garnered attention around the league. That and the fact that he has one more year to go in his eight-year, $6.5 million deal.
With the Ducks looking to go younger, the 32-year-old was an obvious trade target. He has been a top-pair defender for most of his career, though he may have fewer responsibilities with his new team. Over the past three seasons, Fowler has averaged more than 24 minutes a game. He has often been a bright – or at least consistent – light on a team that has missed the playoffs six consecutive seasons.
That’s a hard second half to Fowler’s career, as the team he joined made the playoffs in seven of his first eight years. That six- and likely soon seven-year absence makes past playoff scoring look a bit misty. But he did perform when given the chance.
In 62 playoff games, Fowler scored six goals and 33 points. He undoubtedly wants to increase those numbers with the *insertnameofteamhere* this season and hopefully next.
What Happens Next
We know Cam Fowler was consulted in the deal, giving General Manager Pat Verbeek a list of teams last Summer. That was the easiest way to get around his previously negotiated list of just four teams in his current contract. The Blues are looking to compete and adding Fowler gives them great depth. Fowler is the perfect player to help thrive in Jim Montgomery’s system.
Even if he isn’t used in the top pair, he’s going to be an excellent addition to their depth. And if there is a call for him to move up, he’s very capable of it.
