Report: Anthony DeAngelo Signs With Carolina

Anthony DeAngelo has a new contract. Apparently, you can go home again, with Anthony DeAngelo playing once again for the Carolina Hurricanes. DeAngelo has signed a one year contract that has an AAV of $1.6 million.

Anthony DeAngelo Signs With Carolina

When DeAngelo became persona non grata in New York, the Rangers bought out his deal. Carolina offered him a chance to return to the ice on the cheap, and he used it. They then flipped him to Philadelphia as a restricted free agent, where he signed a two-year, $5 million per contract.

Carolina also got huge value in the trade, taking the Flyers’ fourth (in 2022) third (in 2023) and second (in 2024) round picks for the restricted free agent. And now, they’re getting him back with a retained salary.

DeAngelo’s year in Carolina got his game back on track, scoring 10 goals and 51 points in 64 games. he followed that with 10 points in 14 playoff games. Those numbers were good enough that he priced himself off the notoriously stingy team.

In Philadelphia, he continued his scoring pace, but the far weaker team couldn’t hide his defensive flaws. With the Flyers finally in full rebuild mode, he’s a luxury they can’t afford.

What This Means

For the Hurricanes

This Anthony DeAngelo contract finds himself in familiar territory. The team knows what to expect from DeAngelo, and he clearly works in their system. The right-handed defender wasn’t worth it at $5 million, but at $1.6 million they’ll take him back.

With the cheaper DeAngelo in the fold, Carolina can make other moves like offering Brett Pesce to the market. Carolina already has a deep core on the blue line and DeAngelo helps make it deeper. His offensive ability fits the vision Waddell has for the club and he will slot in on the power play.
