Philadelphia Flyers Acquire Tony DeAngelo

The Carolina Hurricanes have traded restricted free agent defencemen Tony DeAngelo to the Philadelphia Flyers. Carolina receives 2022 second (2024), third (2024) and fourth-round (2022) picks. The Flyers then signed DeAngelo to a two-year, $10 million dollar contract.

Flyers Acquire and Sign Tony DeAngelo

The Carolina Hurricanes defenceman has made a name for himself. Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014, he was then traded to the Arizona Coyotes where he began his NHL career. Arizona then moved the young defencemen to the New York Rangers in exchange for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta.

DeAngelo has increased his production. According to Stat Muse, in 2018-19 he had 30 points, following that up with a career year, scoring 53 points. He made a case to be the man on the New York blue line, but due to off-ice issues, he went on to miss the 2020-21 season.

The controversial defenseman was looking to rehabilitate his career after an unceremonious exit from the New York Rangers. The Hurricanes took a gamble on the defencemen and all of his baggage. After losing offensive juggernaut Dougie Hamilton to the New Jersey Devils, DeAngelo became the replacement, at a significant bargain. In 64 games, the defencemen scored 10 goals, 41 assists and a total of 51 points. He carried that play into the playoffs and in 14 games played he had one goal, nine assists and 10 points. DeAngelo also led all Hurricanes defencemen with a Corsi For Percentage of 61%. The offensive wizard had 20 points on the power play as he became the quarterback on the back end.

What It Means For Philadelphia

As a player, Tony DeAngelo’s extension is worth every penny. He is an elite offensive defenseman in the league. He will likely become a valuable member of the Flyers blueline. The issues with DeAngelo have always been off the ice. He has controversial opinions and has had issues getting along in some locker rooms. Another interesting piece of this is the Flyers new head coach John Tortorella, who used to coach DeAngelo in New York. The two did not always get along, publicly clashing a few times.

For DeAngelo, his plan to rehabilitate his career is still ongoing. His talent is worth more than the last two contracts he has signed, but Carolina publicly stating they would allow DeAngelo to leave raised a few eyebrows. He produced well for the Hurricanes at a bargain price. It could be just a salary cap move by Carolina but there will always be the question of whether DeAngelo has changed behind the scenes.
