Report: Carolina Hurricanes Close to Signing Tony DeAngelo

NHL rumours, Tony DeAngelo

According to a report from Frank Seravelli, after his contract was bought out by the New York Rangers, the Carolina Hurricanes are set to sign defenceman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal.

Carolina Hurricanes To Sign Tony DeAngelo

In DeAngelo, the Hurricanes acquire an offensive, puck-moving defenceman who can find the back of the net. Last season, DeAngelo only played in six games before his off-ice issues came to light. In that time, he scored just one assist while adding four minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 53.6 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 5.7. Unlike the 2019-20 season, where he played in 68 games scoring 15 goals, 38 assists for 53 points. Over his five-year NHL career, DeAngelo has played for the Arizona Coyotes and New York Rangers. In that time, he has 24 goals and 82 assists for 106 career points in 206 career games. He was initially drafted in the first round, 19th overall of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by Tampa Bay Lightning.

What Come’s Next?

After being waived back on January 31st, DeAngelo finds himself with his fourth NHL franchise in his short career. Something drastic needs to change for the defenseman if he will ever sniff an NHL locker room again. With his on-ice performance sub-par compared to last year, where he finished 12th in Norris voting. On-top of off-ice issues on social media and conflicts with teammates. The Rangers see it best fit for both parties to move on from each other. While DeAngelo is a very gifted NHL defenseman, hockey remains the ultimate team sport. There is no place for any negativity within a game that relies so much on chemistry.

Regardless of his off-ice “lifestyle,” so to speak. DeAngelo could and would be an extreme boost to any team’s blue-line. He can control the pace of the game from the back end as well as produce offence. Hopefully, Anthony DeAngelo can sort things out in his return to the NHL.

As a right-hand shot, DeAngelo looks to replace Dougie Hamilton who is an unrestricted free agent. Rumours have linked Hamilton with the New Jersey Devils.
