Tony DeAngelo buyout

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours for Wednesday. We’re two games deep into the Stanley Cup Final, but the off-season chatter is increasing. There’s all this talk about signings and trades, but buyouts also draw gossip. There are a few players that could be bought out of their respective contracts this coming off-season. This edition of NHL rumours looks at a possible Tony DeAngelo buyout.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Tony DeAngelo Buyout Possible

Rumour: Jacob Stoller of The Hockey News listed some potential buyout candidates and DeAngelo’s name appeared on the list. The New Jersey native will be in the final year of a two-year contract that sees him make $5 million. Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella scratched DeAngelo for the last five games of the regular season and only dressed five blueliners in one game. The 27-year-old recorded 11 goals and 31 assists in 70 games with the team. However, the Sewell, N.J. native had his season end in a quiet fashion.

New general manager Daniel Briere is already making changes with the Ivan Provorov trade. There could be more changes on the horizon as Briere looks to overhaul the club. DeAngelo can provide offence from the backend, but there have been issues with his defensive play and attitude in the past.

Will Tony DeAngelo Buyout Happen?

DeAngelo has already been bought out once in his career when the New York Rangers did so in July 2021. The Blueshirts rid themselves of DeAngelo after some issues with teammates. The mercurial defenceman does have some offensive potential, but the end of his 2022-23 campaign raises questions.

Philadelphia would rather trade the blueliner than get nothing for him via a buyout. There would be some cap savings with the defender getting about $1.7 million for the next two years. This would save the Flyers around $3.3 million this season. However, no team likes carrying dead cap space unless they have to. Could DeAngelo be looking for a new team once again in the near future?
