Report: Blue Jackets Get Ivan Provorov In Three Way Trade

One of the first trades of the offseason has happened, and it is a big one.

The Los Angeles Kings, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to a three-way trade which involves Calvin Petersen, Sean Walker, and Ivan Provorov.

Provorov Traded To Columbus

The full trade is a bit complicated; Ivan Provorov has been sent to the Blue Jackets, with Sean Walker, Cal Petersen, and a 2023 first-round pick going to Philadelphia.

Los Angeles is retaining 30% of Provorov’s deal, which gives them more cap space heading into free agency.

Provorov had an average season for his standards, notching 6 goals, 21 assists for 27 points in 82 games. He was drafted 7th overall by the Flyers in 2015 after putting up 73 points with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Provorov also has a massive cap hit, making $6.75 million until the 2024-2025 season.

Petersen, Walker shipped to Philadelphia

Cal Peterson has been traded to the Flyers along with Sean Walker, prospect Hele Grans, and a second-round pick.

Petersen put up a 3.75 GAA and a .868 SV% and was sent to the AHL, where he put up a more respectable 2.88 GAA and a .904 SV%.

Walker has not returned to the production level that he had in 2019-2020, putting up 13 points in 70 games. Both Walker and Petersen have multi-year extensions that are about to kick in.

This move also allows the Kings to re-sign Vladislav Gavrikov, who the Kings have been rumoured to be extending.

What This Means

with the Kings needing cap space, and the Flyers moving Gavrikov’s cap hit, this leaves more questions than answers.

One of those questions is regarding Flyers star goaltender Carter Hart. With the Flyers getting Petersen in the deal, Hart’s future is now in question. Hart did not have a good season by far, and fans have become unhappy with him as the team looks to contend.

Adding Walker gets them a Provorov-calibre player, for a cheaper price.

For now, it seems to be a stepping stone for more transactions.
