It’s time for another helping of NHL rumours. We’re down to the last four in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, there is plenty of activity surrounding other teams. Today’s NHL rumours takes another look at the Calgary Flames general manager search.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Calgary Flames General Manager Search Continues

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman revealed the Calgary Flames general manager search is in the second phase. This was during the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast. Freidman said four names have emerged to replace Brad Treliving. We already talked about Mark Hunter as a possible candidate in a previous edition of NHL rumours.

Other names Friedman mentioned were former Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin and former NHLers Ray Whitney and Craig Conroy. The latter has experience with the club as a player an in the team’s front office. Friedman mentioned that Phase two means the club is narrowing down names and bringing in candidates for interviews.

Update on Calgary Flames General Manager Search

Calgary had a lot of potential going into last season after making a couple of major deals. However, the season fell below expectations and missed the post-season. Treliving and Darryl Sutter are no longer with the club and some big changes may be looming.

Bergevin’s tenure in Montreal ended with a thud after making the Stanley Cup Final. Hunter is a proven general manager at the major junior level with the OHL’s London Knights. Conroy has a strong knowledge of the club, hasn’t been an NHL GM. Whitney would also be getting his first general manager job if he’s hired by the Flames.

Finding a new bench boss will be the first priority for Calgary. However, there are some good players on the team that won a playoff series last season.
