Mark Hunter Among Possible Names in Calgary Flames General Manager Search

Rumour: Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast took a look at possible names for the Flames quest for a new GM. Friedman mentioned that Calgary will start interviews this week for Brad Treliving’s replacement. One of the names that Friedman appeared to highlight is that of former NHLer Mark Hunter, the brother of Dale Hunter.

Mark has been the owner and general manager of the OHL’s London Knights. He did leave the major junior squad for a short time to work in the Toronto Maple Leafs front office from 2015 to 2018.

There will likely be a number of names that will likely be connected to the job. However, Friedman made sure to point out Hunter during the segment. The Sportsnet insider was careful to choose his words in regards to Hunter. However, London’s sustained success in the OHL makes him an attractive candidate.

Hunter has guided the Knights to three OHL crows, two Memorial Cups and also lead the 2020 Team Canada squad to the IIHF World Junior gold medal. He seems like he knows a thing or two about managing young talent. Hunter could get a serious look to be the next Calgary Flames general manager.

The new GM will have some work to do in fixing a squad that missed the post-season. One of the first things this name general manager will have to do is find a new head coach to replace Darryl Sutter behind the bench.
