NHL Rumour: Ottawa Senators Have Not Had Contract Talks With Star Winger

One of the most intriguing teams of the off-season was the Ottawa Senators. There was so much to fall in love with. The additions of Cam Talbot and Claude Giroux were exciting and pairing that with the extensions of Tim Stutzle and Josh Norris made for a fun off-season. But the biggest move of all is winger Alex DeBrincat. The elite winger came over from the Chicago Blackhawks via trade. Today’s rumours focus on an Alex DeBrincat contract extension.

Alex DeBrincat Contract Discussions Have Not Taken Place

Rumour: Elliotte Friedman has mentioned that the Ottawa Senators and Alex DeBrincat have not talked about an extension.

The core of the Senators is set in place. This is the most excitement surrounding the club since the Chris Kunitz goal that sent them packing. Granted the season has not gone as planned, but the future is bright with this group and winning is on the horizon. But with no substantial talks on an Alex DeBrincat contract have begun.

Ottawa Should Sign Him to A New Contract

When Ottawa parted ways with the seventh overall pick, they knew what they were getting. A proven goal scorer and a top-six winger. DeBrincat has hit the 40-goal mark twice, and the 30-goal mark once. Last season was a career year as he scored 41 goals, 37 assists, and 78 points. His first season in Ottawa has not been bad either. As it stands, DeBrincat has 16 goals, 24 assists, and 40 points. He is on pace for 26 goals right now and sits fourth on the team in that regard.

While talks have not begun, the hope is that they will. Given they traded to get him there is no way they let him go or walk away from the club. The way the market is going, DeBrincat is due for a pay raise on his current deal. And once locked up, Ottawa will have a top-six unit that could be among the league’s best.
