Ottawa Senators Make Matt Murray Trade With Toronto Maple Leafs

Matt Murray Trade

Matt Murray has been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with two draft picks in exchange for future considerations. Murray has spent the last two years in Ottawa, after being traded to the team in 2020.

Leafs Make Matt Murray Trade with Senators

The Ottawa Senators have ended their experience with Matt Murray, as they have dealt him to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with a 2023 third round pick, and a 2024 seventh round pick. With Ottawa, he put up a 15-25-3 record, with a 3.23 GAA, and a .899 save percentage.  Murray also played two games for the AHL’s Belleville Senators, although refused to report to them after being sent down.

Before Ottawa, he spent 5 years with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he won two Stanley Cups with the franchise in 2016, and 2017.

Murray has some interesting ties with the Maple Leafs, as he spent 4 seasons with the Sault St Marie greyhounds, which happens to be the team that Kyle Dubas was the General Manager for before he took on a front office role in Toronto.

What the Matt Murray Trade Means

For Toronto, this is a risky experiment. not only does this guarantee that Jack Campbell will leave the team, but Murray did not have a great tenure in Ottawa. As mentioned earlier, he had an under .900 save percentage, and a GAA of over 3. To take on a goaltender with those statistics over a starter like Campbell is bold and a risk that may not be the greatest idea, especially because the Leafs are trying to contend.

Although, he may return to form like he was in Pittsburgh, where he took the Penguins to multiple conference finals appearances, and two Stanley cups. Although, only time will tell with Murray. he is under 30, and could be the Leafs starter for the next little while.

If Murray plays well with Toronto, this could be the one of the best acquisitions for the Leafs, as he was traded for future considerations, Which is a complete surprise as there were worries Toronto would have to give up a package for him

Although, only time will tell with Murray, as he needs to seriously rebound from his time in Ottawa for this trade to be worth it, considering they’re most likely losing Campbell.
