Sean Couturier Out For Remainder Of Season

Sean Couturier out

The Philadelphia Flyers have lost one of their top players. Forward Sean Couturier is out for the remainder of the season after undergoing successful back surgery. The team announced this news Friday morning.

Sean Couturier Out After Successful Back Surgery

The 29-year-old center was having an average season on the Flyers this year, only playing in 29 games in the 2021-22 campaign. In those contests, he’s put up 17 points in the form of six goals and 11 assists. He was seventh on his team in goals, assists, and points, and second on the team in faceoff wins. However, the advanced numbers show his impact is much greater than the scoresheet. A 56.2% Corsi For and a whopping 12.2 relative Corsi, Couturier was top three on his team in both categories. In his 11 year career spent with the Flyers, he’s played in 721 games, scored 180 goals, and assisted on 280, totalling 460 points.

Moving Forward for the Flyers

This has been a season to forget for Philadelphia. Franchise-setting losing streaks, last in the Metropolitan Division, and injuries have made this season go south quickly. And now with Sean Couturier out for the season, the Flyers have yet another issue on their plate. It’s likely we see the Flyers disregard the playoffs this season, and look forward to the draft. Without their second round pick this draft, it’s possible they could become sellers at this year’s trade deadline. This could involve captain Claude Giroux, whose name has been swirling around in trade rumours recently. The Flyers will have to decide quickly what their future plans are, however, as both the deadline and end of the season are approaching fast. Worst case scenario for them would be just missing the playoffs and a higher chance at the first overall pick.
