Hockey is back! Normally we’d be closing in on the NHL trade deadline for the final push of the season. However, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for February 16th, featuring Sidney Crosby.

Sidney Crosby Gets 1,000th Point

2017: The Pittsburgh Penguins captain gets his 1,000th career point on an assist of a first-period goal by Chris Kunitz. Crosby gets to the mark in 757th career game and joins Alex Ovechkin and Henrik Sedin as players to got to 1,000 during the 2016-17 season.

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia gets to work on getting to 2,000 points with an assist an overtime goal. He helps the Penguins beat the Winnipeg Jets, 4-3, in overtime.

Other Notable Events

1937: New York Americans forward Nels Stewart passes Montreal Canadiens great Howie Morenz for first on the all-time goal list. Stewart scores his 272nd career goal in a 2-1 loss to the Habs. He finishes with 324 goals and retires after the 1939-40 season.

1969: Detroit Red Wings centre Alex Delvecchio becomes the third player in NHL history with 1,000 points. He assists on a pair of Gordie Howe goals in a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

1980: Boston Bruins forward Jean Ratelle moves into seventh on the all-time point list with an assist in a 5-3 win versus the Colorado Rockies. Ratelle finishes his career with 1,267 points and enters the Hall of Fame in 1985.

1992: Chicago Blackhawks forward Michel Goulet becomes the 17th player to get 500 career goals. He accomplishes the feat in Chicago’s 5-5 tie with the Calgary Flames.

1995: Three Pittsburgh players have big nights in a 5-2 win over the Hartford Whalers. Luc Robitaille scores four goal, Ron Francis gets his 1,100th point and Ken Wregget extends the team’s record to 12-0-1 to start the season.

1998: The Atlanta franchise goes with the name Thrashers when it starts in the 1999-2000 season.

2001: Mathieu Schneider becomes the first defender in NHL history to score a goal against all 30 teams. He scores in a 4-0 Kings win over the Minnesota Wild.

2005: The NHL lockout claims the regular season and playoffs. It’s the first North American league to lose an entire season due to a labour stoppage.

2018: New York Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss finishes a stretch of Isles goalies not allowing a goal in 95 shots. The Isles beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-0. Jaroslav Halak made 50 saves the game before against the New York Rangers.
