The Athletic’s Joe Smith reports that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos underwent a surgical repair to repair a lower abdominal core muscle on his left side. Stamkos is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to start the 2020-21 season.

Lightning Forward Steven Stamkos Underwent Surgery on Wednesday

Despite playing in just a few minutes of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Stamkos is a Stanley Cup Champion. Stamkos played just 2:47 in Game 3. However, Stamkos made an impact scoring on his only shot of the game helping the Tampa Bay Lightning come out victorious 5-2 and take a 2-1 series lead.

In 57 games this past season, Stamkos scored 29 goals and added 37 assists for 66 points.

Stamkos has spent his entire career with the Lightning. He has scored 422 goals and added 410 assists for 832 points in 803 games.

Stamkos was originally drafted by the Lightning in the first round, first overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Stamkos Good to Go for Next Season

As Smith reports, Stamkos will be ready in time to start next season. Which is huge news for the Lightning. The Lightning were able to overcome adversity and win the Stanley Cup without their captain. However, they surely would like to get him back in the lineup to start the 2020-21 season.

However, Stamkos has found his name come up in rumours lately. Stamkos wasn’t listed as one of the untouchables on the Tampa Bay Lightning team according to Bob McKenzie. This had hockey fans in a stir. The Tampa Bay Lightning are currently looking to move out some serious cap space in order to get Mikhail Sergachev and Anthony Cirelli under contract and people have to wonder if Stamkos could be one of the cap casualties. After winning the Stanley Cup without Stamkos in the lineup, it’s clear the Lightning don’t necessarily need Stamkos in the lineup in order to succeed. This makes him expendable to some extent. However, surely they would like to keep him as he is one of the league premier players. He is still one of the best players and goal scorers in the game and he would make the Lightning even scarier than they already are.
