Kings Perform Miracle on Manchester
1982: The Los Angeles Kings rally from five goals down to beat the Edmonton Oilers, 6-5, in overtime of Game 3 of the Smythe Division semifinals. Los Angeles rallied by scoring five in the third period.
Steve Bozek stuffs a rebound past Grant Fuhr with five seconds left in regulation. Daryl Evans scores 2:35 into overtime to cap the improbable comeback. The win would give the Kings a shocking two games to one series lead. Los Angeles would hold off Edmonton to upset the division champions in five games. The Kings post-season run would end in the next round to the Vancouver Canucks.
Other Notable Events
1934: The Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup for the first time with a 1-0 overtime win in Game 4 over the Detroit Red Wings. Charlie Gardiner gets the shutout and je scores in double OT to secure the Cup.
1956: The Montreal Canadiens take their fifth straight Stanley Cup with a 3-1 victory in Game 5. Jean Beliveau gets a goal and an assist for the Habs as they beat the Red Wings.
1982: Vancouver wins its first playoff series as it sweeps the Calgary Flames, 3-1, in Game 3. Thomas Gradin scores twice to complete the three-game sweep.
1990: The Kings have three players with hat tricks in a 12-4 win over the Flames. Dave Taylor, Tony Granato and Tomas Sandstrom each score three times in Game 4 of the Smythe semis.
1991: Wayne Gretzky becomes the all-time leading playoff scorer with 93 goals. Los Angeles would beat the Canucks, 6-1.
1993: The Pittsburgh Penguins get their 17th straight win in a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers.
The Ottawa Senators snap their record 38-game road losing streak with 5-3 win over the New York Islanders. Laurie Boschman scores twice in the final minute to complete a hat trick for the Sens.
1996: Detroit ties Montreal for the most wins in a season with 60 as they beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-2. The Red Wings would win the final two games to set the new record.
2003: Jean-Sebastien Giguere sets a post-season record for saves with 63 as the Anaheim Ducks stun the Red Wings 2-1 in OT. Paul Kariya gets the overtime-winner in the third overtime as the Ducks steam Game 1.
